Hello guys :) It is good and sunny day out here and i am up with new blog . In my last blog i mentioned about Shradh which means paying homage to your ancestors or forefathers. In India now a days pitru paksh is going. It is a period of 15 days of lunar in which Hindu pay homage to their forefathers. We offer food to them via some rituals. I told you last night that there is a shradh at my home today. We are done with it .We performed a religious ceremony , a pandit ( brahmin who is related with spiritual and religious powers) came to our home to perform this ritual. He divided the food into four parts. One is for cow, one is for crows, one is for dog and one is for fire. Usually the male member of the family or son perform this ritual along with pandit. My brother did it today. After that pandit ate his food.
Pitru paksh usually starts after Ganesh visarjan. The 15th day of this paksh is known as sarvpitri amavasya (dark night) .On this day one can pay homage to those dead persons whose death dates are not confirmed. And on the next very day i mean on 16th day durga pooja starts.
Story behind it. ( pitru paksh )
When in Mahabharta a brave warrior Karan dies and goes to Heaven then Indar ( angel) offers him a gold and jems to deal with his hunger. But karan asks for a food. Then Inder told him that during your life on earth you used to give only gold to poor people or to brahmins ..you never gave food to anyone and you didn't offer anything to your forefathers so this is why you are not able to get anything eatable here. Then karan took the permission of Indar to go on earth for 15 days so he could donate food and water in the memory of his forefathers. Indar gave him the permission and karan came to earth donate food and water to the needy people and also perform the rituals for his descendants and after going back to heaven he got the plenty of food. So that period ( those 15 days) is known as or called pitru paksh. On 15th day forefathers goes back by giving the blessings to their coming and present generations .
Once i read somewhere that for these fifteen days the souls of your forefathers stand on your main door. Basically dead from the previous life time came to earth and feed on the energy of living on this planet.
And yes during this period people avoid to buy any new cloths or any new thing . They don't start any new work. They start it on 16th day i.e on Durga puja.
